Actor George Kennedy, known for Cool Hand Luke and Airport has passed away. His grandson Cory Schenkel reported that Kennedy died on Sunday, February 28, 2016 in Boise, Idaho of old age. He was 91 years old.

Kennedy is best remembered for his role in Cool Hand Luke as a savage chain gang convict in the 1967 movie. He won an Academy Award for portrayal of Dragline in the film. The movie’s theme of rebelling against authority made it one of the most significant movies of the 1960s.

He’s also known for playing airline troubleshooter, Joe Patroni, in the 1970 disaster movie, Airport. He reprised the role for Airport 1975, Airport ’77, and The Concorde…Airport ’79.

In 1988 he starred in the cop movie spoof The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!. Three years later he was back for The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear and then again in Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult.

Kennedy was born in February 1925 in New York City. His father was a musician and orchestra leader and his mother was a ballet dancer. He made his stage debut when he was just 2 years old, in the touring company for Bringing Up Father, then by the age of 7 he was a radio DJ in New York City. He joined the military during World War II and spent 16 years serving until the late 1950s, reaching the rank of captain.

Kennedy’s extensive acting career includes close to 200 movies and TV roles. He made his television debut in The Phil Silvers Show in 1959. He followed that up with several TV guest spots on shows like Laramie, Maverick, Route 66, Gunslinger, Rawhide, a run on Have Gun – Will Travel, Perry Mason, The Andy Griffith Show, Gunsmoke, and many others. On the big screen, he appeared in Charade, McHale’s Navy, The Dirty Dozen, Earthquake, and many others.

He starred in the TV show Dallas in the late 1980s and his final role was in 2014’s The Gambler.
