Quantcast

After more than 20 years, the 2016 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces is returning to the brand's roots. Not only has the exceptional Joe Jusko painted the entire base set, but Upper Deck is also veering the brand back as a high-end release.

The base set has 100 cards, including ten short print High Numbers that have been done on canvas stock. The thicker card stock of even the regular print cards, adds to the premium feel of the release. All 100 base cards are serial numbered and have parallels as well as Printing Plates. The base parallels combine the painting of the character with ad elements to resemble the variant cover of their origin comic.

Jusko is a legend in the realm of comics and fantasy art, and has already worked on several trading card sets previously. The original 1992 SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces release was his doing. Although one of the cheapest Marvel Masterpieces sets today, the quality of Jusko's artwork in those sets gains universal praise still today. In addition to the base set, Jusko also signed a few different types of autographs - approximately three per case (1:4 boxes). Base cards and parallels have signed version numbered to 10, and signed buy backs from previous Marvel Masterpieces sets numbered to 15 or less.

Sketch cards, inspired by Jusko's work especially the 1992 set, are a box hit in 2016 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces. Additional inserts inspired by previous sets are Battle Spectra, Canvas, Holofoil and Gallery. Holofoil and Gallery each have parallels that are limited to 25 copies each, while Battle Spectra has Gem versions. Not to mention the retro-themed insert, Mirage. These highly coveted lenticular cards have four images that are visible as you tilt the card.

With only one base card per pack, combined with the additional short prints, this won't be an easy set to complete. Every box of 2016 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces also has a buyback from the 1992 release, which are stamped to note they're from this product. Other redemptions can also be found for uncut sheets.

The 2016 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces contains 12 packs per box, 3 cards per pack, 12 boxes per case, with a set size of 100 (90 base, 10 short print).

This incredible collectors set was released on June 29, 2016.
