When Star Trek Beyond is released on July 22, 2016 it will introduce the first openly gay main character. That character will be the Enterprise’s pilot Hikaru Sulu, played by John Cho. Cho revealed this information about his character during a press event in Sydney, Australia.

Simon Pegg and Justin Lin, Star Trek Beyond’s writer and director, respectively, made Sulu gay as a nod to George Takei, who played Sulu in the original TV show and has become an LGBT activist.

The movie will not, however, make Sulu’s sexual orientation a major point in the movie. Rather it will be revealed simply as part of his character when his daughter and partner are revealed. In the original Star Trek series Sulu had a daughter, Demora, who became a pilot of Enterprise B.

“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out of it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations,” Cho said to Australia’s Herald Sun.
