A CGC-certified 9.2 copy of Brave and the Bold #28, the first appearance of the Justice League of America, has been sold by Pedigree Comics for $120,000. Long noted as one of the most popular and valuable early Silver Age key issues, Brave and the Bold #28 ranks as #11 according in The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #43. It is also one of the most difficult, if not the most difficult, Silver Age DC first appearance issues to locate in high grade.

The sale was reported by Pedigree Comics President and CEO Doug Schmell.

“Cover dated February-March, 1960, it hit the newsstands more than a year and a half prior to Fantastic Four #1’s debut and is ridiculously difficult to find in high grade. As of this report, only two 9.4s and two 9.2s have been certified, followed by only seven in 9.0 and four in 8.5. This is out of over 550 copies submitted to CGC to date,” Schmell said.

“The sale for $120,000 is a record price for any copy of Brave and the Bold #28, almost doubling the only recorded 9.4 sale (from April, 2004) of $60,375. The other 9.2 copy (with off-white pages) fetched $35,850 in May, 2008. This book is beginning to rise dramatically in demand, popularity and value, evidenced by the recent sales of two 8.5 examples (in September, 2013 for $45,504 and for $40,500 in June, 2013),” he said.

“The book is characterized by exceptional color strike, perfect centering, tight staples, razor sharp edges and corners and phenomenal off-white to white pages. It is easily the third best existing copy behind only the two known 9.4 copies and looks even nicer up close than any possible description could make. The buyer is a collector of only high grade Silver Age Marvels and DC keys and first appearance issues,” he said.
