Lately it seems DC fans only have one thing on their minds: what is DC Rebirth? Between the live-stream of DC All Access (DCAA) this year at WonderCon and the DC Rebirth Roadshow, Co-Publishers Dan Didio and Jim Lee set out to answer that question.

Dan Didio openly acknowledges that DC lost their way, and Rebirth is their chance to demonstrate their recommitment to the stories, characters, and fans that make DC so great. The main goal of Rebirth isn't to reboot the DC Universe (DCU), but to get back to the core essence of DC, restoring continuity, revealing DCU secrets and even returning some old favorites.

One important note is that while New 52 was indeed a reboot, Rebirth is not. Rebirth is about the philosophy of storytelling, rebuilding characters/series to set the table for the future while still paying homage to the past.

“Rebirth is about honoring characters and moving them forward without negating the past,” COO Geoff Johns said. He shares a passion for comics and is said to have a hand in every story coming forward from the Rebirth. It's no wonder Johns is referred to as an “instrumental architect of Rebirth,” by both Didio and Lee.

Using the lessons learned from New 52, Didio and Lee are confident that Rebirth combines the aspects that made New 52 great with creative new ideas to make Rebirth even better. New costumes from fresh art teams create more variety and provide a cool new look for DCU, while strong stories/characters still remain the most fundamental thing.

“Doubling down,” on their strongest characters, Didio announced that 17 series will be released twice-monthly, with 15 others only once monthly. This is however subject to change should Didio and Lee notice a lack of purchase in the twice monthly titles. All of the titles (aside from DC Universe Rebirth #1) have been priced at only $2.99. You can view all of the DC Rebirth titles scheduled to be released on Scoop.

Interestingly, all of these titles will (to varying degrees) play part in a two-year story arc to be revealed throughout Rebirth. Again, Rebirth is all about getting a fun voice back out in DC to excite the fans and give them something to take away from it all. Didio and Lee are confident they have put together a team of exceptional writers/artists that collaborate well and will make Rebirth a huge success.

The Bat-family creative teams include Tom King, David Finch, and Mikel Janin (Batman); James Tynion IV, Eddy Barrows, and Alvaro Martinez (Detective Comics); Hope Larson and Rafael Albuquerque (Batgirl); Tim Seeley, Javi Fernandez, and Marcus To (Nightwing); Scott Snyder (All-Star Batman); and Julie Benson, Shawna Benson, and Claire Roe (Batgirl and The Birds of Prey).

Just a few things to look forward in the DC Rebirth are the return of Action Comics and Detective Comics numbering (#957 and #934 respectively), the shocking death of a DCU character, the reveal of the Joker's true name, and what is ominously referred to as “the greatest threat it [DCU] has ever faced.”
