Burt Kwouk, best known for his portrayal of Inspector Clouseau’s servant Cato in the Pink Panther film series, has passed away at the age of 85 on May 24, 2016.

Kwouk was born in England but was raised in Shanghai, living there until he was 17 years old. He later traveled to the United States to study, graduating from Bowdoin College in 1953. A year later he returned to Britain, where he’d start his acting career.

His film career started in the late ‘50s, when he appeared in pictures such as The Inn of the Sixth Happiness and The Sinister Man. He also appeared on television shows such as Danger Man, Man of the World, and The Sentimental Agent.

Besides appearing as Cato in the various Pink Panther films, Kwouk also appeared across three different James Bond films in different roles. In Goldfinger, he appears as nuclear expert Mr. Ling, and in You Only Live Twice he was featured as the Japanese operative “Spectre 3.” He also appeared in the 1967 spoof Casino Royale as a general.

Later roles included appearing as the honorable Major Yamauchi in the World War II drama Tenko from 1981-1984, plus a regular role on The Last of Summer Wine from 2002 to the series’ conclusion in 2010. Kwouk was later honored for his work in film and television by being appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2011 New Year Honors for his services to drama.
