Steven Hill, the actor known for his portrayal of District Attorney Adam Schiff on Law & Order, passed away. Rachel, his wife, confirmed that he passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 in New York. Hill was 94 years old.

Hill provided one-liners as the gruff DA Adam Schiff in 229 episodes of Law & Order from 1990 to 2000. He was the longest running original cast member, with his debut beginning in the series’ second episode.

“Steven was not only one of the truly great actors of his generation, he was one of the most intelligent people I have ever met,” Law & Order creator Dick Wolf said. “He is also the only actor I’ve known who consistently tried to cut his own lines.”

He also portrayed Daniel Briggs in Mission Impossible in 1966 to 1967.

Hill was born Solomon Krakovsky in Seattle, Washington in 1922. He served in the United States Naval Reserve for four years then in the 1950s he moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting.

His onscreen career began in episodes of Actor’s Studio in 1949. He appeared in A Lady Without Passport, Goodyear Playhouse, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Dr. Kildare, The Greatest Show on Earth, Eyewitness, Legal Eagles, Thirtysomething, Columbo, and The Firm. His final onscreen performance was in Law & Order in 2000.
