Nintendo officially unveiled their latest home console as the Nintendo Switch via a “First Look” trailer that debuted online on October 20, 2016. The video showed off the new console in various ways – most notably, how it appears to be a hybrid home console and handheld unit via a screen that can be taken out of a dock.

Previously referred to as the “NX,” the Switch showed off the capabilities of the hardware as well as the many different software titles that will be available at launch, including hot Nintendo first-party titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart, as well as some high profile third-party entries like Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

“The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles,” Nintendo’s official statement reads. “At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.”

The new controllers are called Joy-Con controllers, and attach to either side of the portable screen of the Switch. Two players can play at once by each using one, or one player can have a Joy-Con in each hand for a single-player experience, as shown off by the trailer.

Confirmed third-party supporters of the Switch include developers such as Activision, Atlus, Bandai-Namco, Bethesda, Capcom, EA, FromSoftware, Konami, Sega, Spike Chunsoft, Square Enix, Ubisoft, Warner Bros., and many others.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America, in a press release. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

The Nintendo Switch will be available in March 2017.
