Andrew Sachs, best known as the Spanish waiter Manuel on Fawlty Towers, has passed away at the age of 86 after what has been reported as a four-year struggle with dementia. Britian’s Daily Mail quoted his wife, Melody, as confirming the actor’s passing.

Despite only existing as two short series in the 1970s, Fawlty Towers, created by Monty Python member John Cleese and his then-wife Connie Booth, made Sachs’ Manuel a household name with Brit-com fans. The show remains popular.

Cleese tweeted that he couldn’t have found a better Manuel.

Despite being so identified with Manuel, who Sachs played as a kind-but-bumbling transplant from Barcelona with little understanding of English, he worked steadily in television and film from 1959 to 2015. Among his credits was a role in Dustin Hoffman’s Quartet with Maggie Smith and Billy Connolly, among others, in 2012.

Andrew Sachs is survived by his wife and three children.
