It seems fans won't be heading to the final frontier as soon as they thought. A statement from CBS announced a possible delay for the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery - most recently scheduled for May.

“Production on Star Trek: Discovery begins next week. We love the cast, the scripts and are excited about the world the producers have created. This is an ambitious project; we will be flexible on a launch date if it’s best for the show. We’ve said from the beginning it’s more important to do this right than to do it fast. There is also added flexibility presenting on CBS All Access, which isn’t beholden to seasonal premieres or launch windows,” the statement reads.

The delay is likely the cause of production hiccups, including Bryan Fuller stepping down from the showrunner role back in October. Fuller then passed the show over to executive producers Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, who slid the premiere date to May 2017. Thus allowing The Good Fight to become the first CBS All Access original series, premiering on February 19, 2017.

Production was previously pushed back from November to January. Thankfully, core casting was completed in December with Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead) joining as the lead role. Other series regulars include Anthony Rapp (Rent), Doug Jones (Crimson Peak), Michelle Yeoh (Mechanic: Resurrection), Chris Obi (The Call Up), Shazad Latif (The Man Who Knew Infinity), and Mary Chieffo (Miss Dial).

Amid the production delay reports came one sparkling piece of good news. James Frain has been officially announced as playing Sarek, Spock’s famous father. Throughout the 50 years of the Star Trek franchise, Sarek has made multiple appearances. Frain has played important roles in several genre series, including Orphan Black, Gotham, Agent Carter, Grimm, and True Blood.

Star Trek: Discovery will have a special linear premiere on CBS, with subsequent episodes to be released exclusively via CBS All Access.
