On Thursday, February 23, 2017, Heritage Auctions sold a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 CGC 8.5 for $155,350 during the first day of their three-day Comics & Comic Art Auction. The event, held on February 23-25, includes several key books and significant collections, including the personal collection of cartoonist Richard Felton Outcault.

“Whether you’re talking about a longtime collector or someone who is brand-new to the hobby, everyone has a high grade copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 near the top of his or her want list,” Heritage Auctions Comics and Comic Art Operations Director Barry Sandoval said. “Still, it is always pleasing to see Heritage clients step up to the plate.”

Printed in August 1962, Amazing Fantasy #15 is one of the most sought after comics, known for the first appearance and origin of Spider-Man. The title has become especially appealing for Silver Age collectors since there are few high grade copies. According to Heritage, this example has retained its condition without going through any restoration.

Other top lots expected to draw bidders are a Frank Frazetta Thor’s flight oil painting original art, Batman #1 CGC 3.5, Detective Comics #35 CGC 7.5, Bill Elder MAD #2 “Mole!” complete 7-page story, Batman #1 CBCS 2.5, Alex Raymond Flash Gordon original art dated 10-27-35, Frank Miller and Klaus Janson Daredevil #165 splash page 1 original art, and Bernie Wrightson Swamp Thing #6 cover original art.
