Just a few weeks ago, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show celebrated its 20th anniversary on March 10, 2017. The attention the anniversary received online and other press mediums proves that love for the cult classic is still strong.

On Tuesday, March 28, Entertainment Weekly revealed that Simon & Schuster’s teen division, Simon Pulse will publish a new spinoff series based on the show. Written by New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White, Slayer, will be published in the fall of 2018.

“I’ll be honest: when I got the offer to write Slayer, I totally screamed,” she said. “It scared my children. I’m not sorry.”

Slayer will follow a new slayer from the group of potentials that Willow woke in the TV show’s last episode. White is no stranger to teen literature, having written the And I Darken trilogy and the fantasy series Paranormalcy.

Simon Pulse has already been connected to the series, publishing the authorized Buffy the Vampire Slayer Watcher’s Guides while the show was on the air. On October 3, Simon Pulse will debut Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Twenty Years of Slaying. The special hardcover collector’s edition with the best content from Volumes 1-3 of the Watcher’s Guides, plus exclusive new content such as never before seen interviews with cast and crew members.

“We have always had a special affection for Buffy at Simon Pulse, as evidenced by our long publishing history with the brand,” Liesa Abrams, vice president and editorial director of Simon Pulse, said. “Kiersten White, whose work we deeply admire, is the perfect author to write an original series set in the Buffyverse. We couldn’t be more excited to have Kiersten on board to bring her skill and passion for Buffy together with one of the most influential properties in popular culture.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s influence on my own writing can’t be underestimated,” White, who was a fan of the show when she was in high school, said. “When my agent asked if I was interested, I basically said, ‘Every book I’ve ever written was an audition for this.’ It’s still stunning to me that I get to contribute to a world that has been part of my imagination for more than half my life. Dreaming up my own slayer is one of the most surreal experiences of my career so far. I’m so excited to share her with diehard Scoobies and new fans alike!”
