The new film adaptation of It, based on Stephen King’s beloved horror novel, has had some bumps in the road. But now, the film is on track, the first trailer has been released, and it’s looking good.

Set in 1989, it follows a group of preteens who call themselves The Losers Club. The trailer opens with little Georgie, younger brother to Losers Club member Bill, chasing his boat down the street in the rain where it disappears into a storm drain. That’s when things start to get freaky.

The kids talk about how often people disappear in Derry, much more than anywhere else in the country. Investigating the weirdness leads to seeing signs of Pennywise around them, as the demonic clown tortures them with their fears. The trailer finishes with text flashing between frightening scenes, asking “What are you afraid of?”

King’s It is quite a dense book, making it virtually impossible to fit in a typical film length. This version splits the large story, covering about half of the book, all when the characters are still kids. It is likely that the producers are already planning for the second half, when the Losers Club is grown up, and the members have returned to Derry.

It, directed by Andrés Muschietti (Mama), will be in theaters on September 8, 2017. The screenplay was adapted by Gary Dauberman (Annabelle), Chase Palmer (Neo-Noir), and Cary Joji Fukunaga (Beasts of No Nation).

Bill Skarsgård (Allegiant) stars as Pennywise. Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Jaeden Lieberher (St. Vincent), Jeremy Ray Taylor (Ant-Man), Sophia Lillis (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Jack Dylan Grazer (Tales of Halloween), Chosen Jacobs (Hawaii Five-0), and Wyatt Oleff (Guardians of the Galaxy) make up the story’s Losers Club.
