On Monday, May 15, 2017, Syfy Wire uploaded a behind the scenes video on the upcoming Universal Monster reboot of The Mummy. While the Mummy herself appears in the video, another hot tempered character was the focal point.
Russell Crowe was featured as Dr. Henry Jekyll, along with a glimpse of his nastier counterpart, Mr. Hyde. Director Alex Kurtzman (People Like Us) had previously shared that Prodigium, Jekyll’s organization, would provide the connection between the new Universal Monster movies. The group studies the monsters and, as seen in the clip, collects artifacts based on those monsters.
“The central character behind all the events in the movie is Dr. Henry Jekyll – famous for being Jekyll and Hyde,” Producer Sean Daniel said.
The director and producers go on to explain that Prodigium is “hiding in plain sight” at the Natural History Museum and that they wanted to ground the monsters in our reality through science.
“There’s a lot to find out with Jekyll and, it’s not giving too much away to say that, he has quite a clear understanding of evil,” Crowe said.
The Mummy begins the fresh wave of Universal Monster reboots on June 9, 2017. It was written by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange) and Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation). Tom Cruise leads the film as Nick Morton, with Crowe, Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond) as Ahmanet the titular Mummy, Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle), Chasty Ballesteros (The Funhouse Massacre), and Jake Johnson (New Girl).
