An exhibition of curious-looking baseballs is coming to the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia. The show, called Having a Ball: George Sosnak’s Striking Portraits from America’s Pastime will be available to view from July 6 to August 27, 2017.

George Sosnak spent decades in professional baseball working as an umpire, and took to painting as a hobby. After being asked by a fan to paint a player on the leather of an actual baseball, Sosnak not only did so, but went on to paint hundreds more. Many painted balls started with the player’s actual autograph, with the painting being built around that; Sosnak also got into the habit of recording various bits of odd trivia on several of the baseballs.

By the time of Sosnak’s death in 1992, he completed roughly 800 different painted baseballs (with 3,000 or so started, too), and also finished two-dimensional projects, too. The works on view at the museum are on loan from a local private collector; admission to the show is free.
