During the 2017 D23 Expo, Disney officially announced the actors playing Aladdin, Jasmine, and Genie for the live-action Aladdin remake. Naomi Scott (Power Rangers) has been cast as Princess Jasmine, with Will Smith playing the Genie, and relative newcomer Mena Massoud (Jack Ryan) joining the cast in the titular role.

The original 1992 animated movie was inspired by an Arabic folk tale about a young man who finds a genie trapped in a lamp and is granted three wishes. At the time of its release, Aladdin was the highest grossing film of the year, and won Academy Awards for best score and best song for “A Whole New World.”

Directing the project is Guy Ritchie, adapted from a new script by John August (Big Fish). Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes) is producing Aladdin through his Lin Pictures company, along with executive producer Jonathan Eirich.
