On August 14, 2017, stuntwoman Joi “S.J.” Harris – known as the first female African-American road racer – was killed after a motorcycle trick went wrong on the set of Deadpool 2.

“Vancouver police can confirm that a female stunt driver has died on the set of Deadpool during a stunt on a motorcycle,” the Vancouver police department said in a statement.

The stunt Harris was filming involved crashing through the glass of the Shaw Tower’s ground floor studio. After successfully completing the stunt four times, on the fifth attempt Harris lost control of her bike. She was then carried onto an Advanced Life Support ambulance.

“We are deeply saddened by the accident that occurred on the set of Deadpool 2 this morning. Our hearts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of our crew member during this difficult time,” shared a spokesman for 20th Century Fox.

Ryan Reynolds posted a statement on Twitter, saying: “Today, we tragically lost a member of our crew while filming Deadpool. We’re heartbroken, shocked, and devastated… but recognize nothing can come close to the grief and inexplicable pain her family and loved ones must feel in this moment. My heart pours out to them – along with each and every person she touched in this world.”

“I’m deeply saddened by the loss of one of our stunt performers today. No words can express how I and the rest of the Deadpool 2 crew feel about this tragedy. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and loved ones in this difficult time,” Director David Leitch said.
