David Cassidy, the ’70s teen heartthrob of The Partridge Family, passed away. His publicist Jo-Ann Geffen announced his passing on Tuesday, November 21, 2017. He was 67 years old.

Geffen shared that he had been admitted to the intensive care unit of a Fort Lauderdale hospital in critical condition, suffering from organ failure. “David died surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had griped him for so long. Thank you for the abundance and support you have shown him these many years,” she said.

Cassidy was born on April 12, 1950 in New York City. The son of actor-singer Jack Cassidy and actress Evelyn Ward, he grew up surrounded by the entertainment industry. His parents divorced early in his life and his father married Shirley Jones in 1956. His onscreen career began in 1969 with a string of guest spots on TV shows like The Survivors, Adam-12, Bonanza, and Mod Squad.

It was then that Jones and Cassidy started playing mother and son on The Partridge Family – one of the biggest family sitcoms of the ’70s. The musical show about a widowed mother and her five children that pursue a musical career ran for four seasons from 1970 to 1974.

Cassidy starred as the eldest son Keith who stole plenty of teen hearts onscreen and onstage. The show produced several radio hits like “I Think I Love You,” featuring Cassidy on lead vocals. In addition to music for the show, Cassidy released several hit albums as a solo act.

In ’78 he got his own show, David Cassidy – Man Undercover, which ran for one season. This was followed by theater work in touring productions and regional shows. On TV, he continued doing guest spots on The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, The Flash, and The John Larroquette Show.

This was followed by a run in Las Vegas, which began with the show EFX in ’96, then three years later he co-wrote and co-produced the Vegas production, The Rat Pack Is Back!, followed by starring in At the Copa in 2000.

After Vegas he continued touring around the U.S. and internationally. Cassidy wrote his autobiography Could It Be Forever? My Story, in 2007. Two years later, he starred in the TV show Ruby and the Rockits, which was developed and produced by his brother Shaun and co-starred his brother Patrick.

Cassidy announced that he was struggling with alcohol and substance abuse in 2008 then after being arrested for DUI offenses he entered rehab. Earlier this year he shared that he had dementia.

He had been married three times, fathered two children – Katie (an actress who stars on Arrow) and a son named Beau.
