Sony’s reboot of Masters of the Universe, scheduled to release December 2019, is set to begin filming in April 2018. No location for shooting has been confirmed, however Europe is rumored to be a potential destination.
The studio, which has been working on launching this project since 2009, recently hired David Goyer as director and co-writer after Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) stepped aside. Goyer previously directed Blade: Trinity and The Unborn and wrote on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel. Joining Goyer is screenwriter Lindsey Beer (Godzilla vs Kong).
Masters of the Universe, based on Mattel’s popular action figure line, centers around Adam of Eternia, a/k/a He-Man. After traveling from his home on Eternia to Earth, He-Man worked to stop his arch enemy Skeletor from wielding the Cosmic Key. An animated series inspired by the toyline ran from 1983 to 1985, with a reboot in 1990 and 2002. A live action film, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, debuted in 1987.
Masters of the Universe is slated to hit theaters on December 18, 2019. Casting details have not yet been revealed.
