John Ridley (12 Years A Slave) has been tapped to write The Other History of the DC Universe, which, according to DC, “will analyze iconic DC moments and chart sociopolitical gains through the perspectives of DC superheroes who come from traditionally disenfranchised groups.”

This series will showcase popular characters such as John Stewart, Vixen, Supergirl, and Katana, along with lesser known characters like Renee Montoya and Extraño of the Global Guardians.

The Other History of the DC Universe isn’t about saving the world, it’s about having the strength to simply be who you are,” reads DC’s announcement.

“I could not be more excited by the opportunity to excavate the canon of the DC Universe through a vast array of characters who’ve earned their seat at the table,” said Ridley in a statement. “I’m very impressed with DCs commitment to making their history as reverent and urgent as it is engaging and entertaining for all its many fans.”

Ridley has previously contributed to comic books such as The Authority: Human on the Inside, The Razors Edge: Warblade, and his creator-owned series The American Way. This latter series follows superhero history through the eyes of people of color.

On January 13, 2018, Ridley appeared on DC’s panel The Many Shades of Heroism: DC Heroes Through the African-American Lens, during the DC in DC event. This panel was livestreamed on DCs YouTube channel, and saw Ridley tease more details about The Other History of the DC Universe.

No artist or release date for the series has been announced yet.
