The first trailer for the standalone Venom film has released, focusing on the trials and tribulations that Eddie Brock will endure over the course of the story. The film stars Tom Hardy as Brock/Venom, who in this film will be portrayed as more of an antihero than the villain he’s more commonly known as.

Venom first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 in 1988. The Venom film will be taking its story cues primarily from two comic storylines, Planet of the Symbiotes and Lethal Protector, both of which were crucial to the character’s transformation from Spider-Man’s nemesis into a reluctant ally. This will be the second time that the character has been seen in live-action format; the first was in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, where he was portrayed by Topher Grace.

Venom, in addition to Hardy, stars Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, and Jenny Slate. The film is being directed by Ruben Fleischer with a script by Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner and Kelly Marcel. It is being produced by Sony, and the company intends for Venom to launch its own franchise adjacent to the Marvel Cinematic Universe; there have been rumors about future crossovers with the Spider-Man films that currently star Tom Holland.

Venom arrives in theaters on October 5, 2018.
