Following the four-day Presidents Day weekend, Disney’s and Marvel Studios’ Black Panther has globally earned $426.6 million at the box office. The highly-anticipated superhero film debuted at $242 million domestically, surpassing Star Wars: The Last Jedi at $241.6 million. Aside from Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($288.1 million), Black Panther made history in its first four days by earning more than any movie at the North American box office.

Black Panther surpassed Force Awakens’ $40.1 million, when it scored the biggest Monday in history with $40.2 million. The film’s three-day total of $201.8 million earned it the fifth-biggest domestic opening of all time and second-biggest for a superhero title behind Marvel’s The Avengers at $207.4 million.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther alongside Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis.

The nearly all-black cast fueled an equally diverse audience. According to comScore, 37% of ticket buyers were African American, followed by Caucasians at 35% and Hispanics at 18%. Given the portrayal of strong women within the film, its no wonder that women made up 45% of all ticket buyers.

Along with breaking the record for biggest opening for an African-American director and the biggest February bow, the superhero film also scored 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and received an A+ from CinemaScore.

The film, which cost $200 million to make, saw a major response overseas as well. It launched to $184.6 million through Monday for a global debut of $426.6 million. Although it opened in almost every major market, Black Panther will be opening in Russia on February 22, Japan on March 1, and China on March 9.
