The UK amusement park, Thorpe Park, has announced plans to open the first high speed roller coaster themed after AMC’s The Walking Dead. Opening Spring 2018, this track will use multi-sensory elements (yes, smell included) to take riders on a twisting journey past the hungry undead. Along with grim scenes from the series, the ride will also feature iconic backdrops like the prison watchtower and the Alexandria Safe Zone.

In addition to live actors and mid-course pauses, the outdoor queue area will include a swarm of blood-soaked walkers. To bring The Walking Dead: The Ride to life, or more aptly to death, the park is retooling their existing X:\ No Way Out indoor coaster. Designed by Vekoma, the firm behind Disney’s Expedition Everest and Space Mountain, this attraction originally opened in 1996.

Spearheading the ride’s creative direction is Thorpe Park’s John Burton, who told British outlet The Independent, “It’s 15 out of 10 on the scare scale. We are combining physical and digital effects because it is going to be dark, so we are going to make the most of that. The darkness acted as a canvas for us. We have incorporated the latest in special effects, lighting, smells, and even touch elements to create a terrifyingly unique atmosphere.”

“Thorpe Park Resort has been consistently raising the bar in the scare stakes for years and this will be the ultimate test of riders’ mettle,” Burton continued. “It is going to be right up there with the best in the world in terms of the whole experience.”

As part of Thorpe Park’s Year of The Walking Dead initiative, guests can also experience staged zombie hunts this summer, as well as walk-through attraction riddled with walkers.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on February 25, while The Walking Dead: The Ride is expected to debut around Easter. Thorpe Park reopens for its 2018 season on March 23, but season passes to the Surrey based park are available now.
