New York Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard has embraced his nickname of “Thor,” inspired as much by his ability to drop the hammer, so to speak, on opponents as it is by his long golden locks. The Mets will celebrate the name this season with a t-shirt giveaway, featuring Syndergaard’s likeness in a Thor getup as drawn by Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada.

Quesada, a Mets fan himself, Tweeted about the shirt, saying, “Every once in a while I have an opportunity that’s off the beaten path like mixing two of my favorite things in this world, New York Mets baseball and comics. I had almost as much fun drawing the Mighty Noah Syndergaard as I do watching him pitch!”

This will be the second time that the Mets have done a promotional crossover with Marvel based on Syndergaard and Thor – in 2017 a bobblehead was made based on the nickname.

Syndergaard has been pitching in the majors since 2015 and was the opening day starter for the Mets in 2017, though he ended up on the disabled list for most of the season after tearing a muscle in his right arm at the end of April. He is expected to be a major part of the pitching rotation in the 2018 season.

The Thor/Syndergaard “Here Comes The Thunder” t-shirt will be given away to all fans in attendance at Citi Field on Friday, July 6, 2018, when the Mets take on the Tampa Bay Rays in an interleague matchup.
