Former First Lady Barbara Bush died at her home in Houston on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. She was 92 years old.

Barbara was the wife of 41st President George H.W. Bush and mother of 43rd President George W. Bush. During her time in the political spotlight, she was an admired, popular First Lady who shared her sense of humor with the public and was unconcerned with the pretentious side of politics. She could also amuse the public as well for chastising journalists for being rude or too aggressive.

Barbara and former President Bush had celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary in January, making them the longest married couple in presidential history. She was only the second woman in U.S. history to have her husband and son become president.

Devoted to her family, Barbara was a valued speaker during campaigns in 1980 and ’84 when her husband ran with Ronald Reagan, ’88 and ’92 for his presidential runs, and in 2000 for her son’s bid for president.

Born Barbara Pierce on June 8, 1925 in New York City, she attended the Milton School and the private Rye Country Day School, finishing high school at Charleston, SC boarding school Ashley Hall. In 1941, she met George Bush at Round Hill Country Club in Greenwich, CT and they were married in 1945 while he was on leave from the Navy. Their first son, George, was born in 1946 and two years later they moved to Texas. They had five more children, though tragically, their daughter Pauline died from leukemia.

Throughout much of her life, she volunteered for many charities and organizations. She raised money for the United Negro College Fund, started a thrift shop in Midland, and volunteered at hospitals and nursing homes.

One of her most important causes was championing for literacy. While George was vice president, she went to over 500 events to promote literacy and as the first lady, she started the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.
