Start crossing your fingers now to hear “As you wish” in the Upside Down because Cary Elwes has joined the cast of Stranger Things. The Princess Bride star will play Mayor Kline of Hawkins, Indiana.
But, he won’t play the charming hero this time around. Netflix described the mayor as “handsome, slick, and sleazy” as the “classic ’80s politician – more concerned with his own image than with the people of the small town he governs.”
Elwes is yet another star to be cast in Stranger Things who is backed by 1980s nostalgia. Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Heathers) stars as the series matriarch and the show has hosted guest stars Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket), Sean Astin (Goonies), and Paul Reiser (Aliens).
Jake Busey has joined Stranger Things, set to guest star in episodes when the kids go into the Upside Down. Busey (Starship Troopers, Contact) will play a journalist for The Hawkins Post “with questionable morals and a sick sense of humor.”
Priah Ferguson will return as Lucas’ likeable sister Erica and Maya Thurman-Hawke (Little Women) joins as a series regular named Robin. Her character was described as sharp and playful, bored with her day job who wants a more exciting life.
“It’s very much the Stranger Things I think people know and love,” Executive Producer Shawn Levy said. “It’s big and spooky. Season three has legitimately creepy moments and events, but it’s incredibly warm and character-based because at the end of the day, I think that’s what people love most about Stranger Things.”
