In mid-August, it was announced that Dark Horse would no longer publish Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics, after a 20-year relationship between the publisher and the property. But the Scooby Gang won’t be out of comics for too long. BOOM! Studios has announced that they have acquired the comic book and graphic novel license to the beloved series.

BOOM! will publish a new monthly comic series, limited series, original graphic novels, and more as it expands on the mythology created on the TV show, novels, and beyond, in partnership with 20th Century Fox Consumer Products.

Created by writer-director Joss Whedon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran from 1997 to 2003, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers. Mixing horror, comedy, and drama, the show followed Buffy and her friends as she battles vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness. The show also capitalized on Whedon’s style by filling the show with pop culture references and stylish dialogue.

BOOM! recently became the home of another Whedon series, Firefly, as well as other licensed titles for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Planet of the Apes, and Rugrats.

“I remember watching the premiere of Buffy the Vampire Slayer over 20 years ago, and the feeling of empowerment that came with seeing a girl get to kick ass and have flaws at the same time, and to not apologize for who she was. It’s an honor to oversee that world for a new generation and to bring them that same feeling of knowing your greatest power comes from being true to who you are,” said Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Buffy is about love at its core, love for your friends and yourself. The characters are allowed to be equal parts human and monster, and seeing them struggle to balance those parts of themselves, the same parts we all struggle with, is why it still resonates with audiences of all ages and backgrounds today.”
