Fox will be rereleasing Deadpool 2 in theaters just in time for the holidays with a new, family-friendly name in accordance with the PG-13 rating this new cut received. Titled Once Upon a Deadpool, the recut of the film will have a limited engagement in theaters that will begin on December 12, 2018 and conclude on Christmas Eve.

Its new rating and the timing of the release will position it as perhaps a popular choice for younger teens that are on their school’s winter holiday break. Once Upon a Deadpool features reedited footage from Deadpool 2 that has been updated to meet the PG-13 standards of violence and strong language.

The film also features a new framing sequence that features Fred Savage of Wonder Years fame.

“Fox has been asking for a PG-13 basically since the start in 2006,” Reynolds told Deadline. “I’ve said no since 2006. Now, this one time, I said ‘Yes’ on two conditions. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage.”

The charity aspect of the rerelease involved #1 going to the F**k Cancer campaign, which will be temporarily renamed “Fudge Cancer” for the sake of keeping things PG-13.

Deadpool 2 finished its original 22-week theatrical release with a global box office take of $734 million.
