BOOM! Studios has provided the first look at Buffy the Vampire Slayer character designs for the upcoming series by artist Dan Mora.

The first issue will hit store shelves on January 9, 2019 with a reimagining of the pop culture phenomenon from the beginning. The series will be written by Jordie Bellaire with series creator Joss Whedon serving as story consultant. Readers will see Buffy moving to a new school, trying to make friends, and fighting vampires – in a modern setting, rather than her ’90s roots.

The character images depict a modernized style, while adequately resembling the actors from the beloved TV show. Their clothing is also updated, especially for Willow, though Giles is still sporting a tweed suit and Spike is rocking his red shirt and black leather jacket combo.

“Once you fight your way through all the monsters of the week and threats around every corner, Buffy is about something we’ve all experienced – the awkward, uncomfortable journey of figuring out who we choose to be. Dan Mora captures the spirit of that struggle with the perfect style and attitude for slaying the monsters hiding in the dark...and in the light of day,” said Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor, BOOM!
