Ahead of Doctor Who’s season 11 finale, a new teaser for the New Year’s Day special taunts the impending arrival of a mysterious new threat. According to Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor, this ancient evil has “been buried on Earth since the ninth century.” Adding that, “It’s not going to stop until it’s taken over this whole planet. It’s gonna kill anyone that gets in its path.”

The brief trailer shows the Time Lord gathering her new companions aboard the TARDIS to catch them up on the dangerous creature threatening the planet. Flashbacks within the teaser see the nameless evil imprisoned by Vikings in the Dark Ages before making its way to the present day with disastrous results.   

The first Doctor Who New Year’s Day special, titled Resolution, replaces the the longrunning tradition of a Christmas special. It will premiere on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at 8 PM ET on BBC America. Alongside Whittaker’s Doctor will be co-stars Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole, and Mandip Gill.

Following the special, the TARDIS crew will reunite for a brand new season in early 2020 in a season spearheaded by showrunner, Chris Chibnall.
