Holy millennium, Batman! Ahead of the March 2019 release of Detective Comics #1000, DC Comics has unveiled the main wraparound cover by Jim Lee. The Batman alum’s cover sees the Caped Crusader inside the Batcave alongside Nightwing and Alfred Pennyworth. Captured and bound with the heroes are classic villains such as the Joker, Scarecrow, and Riddler.

Along with Lee’s cover, DC has also released a series of variant covers tracking the publishers landmark creation across nine decades. The journey time begins with Steve Rude’s 1930s Batman cover, followed by Bruce Timm’s homage to Jerry Robinson’s Detective Comics #69. Subsequent variants include Michael Cho’s 1950s cover, Jim Steranko’s 1960s cover, Bernie Wrightson’s 1970s cover, Frank Miller’s 1980s cover, Tim Sale’s 1990s cover, Jock’s 2000s cover, with Greg Capullo returning to the Dark Knight for the 2010s cover.

Peter J. Tomasi and Doug Mahnke, the current creative team for Detective Comics, are slated to write and draw the issue’s lead story. Additional stories in the 96-page issue will be provided by Geoff Johns, Brian Michael Bendis, Paul Dini, Christopher Priest, Denny O’Neil, Neal Adams, Kelley Jones, Dustin Nguyen, and Alex Maleev, among others.

“Batman is one of the most enduring characters in popular culture, and his debut in Detective Comics represented a pivotal moment in comics and pioneered a new type of superhero that would appeal to every generation,” DC Publisher Dan DiDio said in a statement. “Batman continues to have an impact on entertainment worldwide and the 1,000th issue of Detective Comics is a testament to the creative genius of Bob Kane and Bill Finger and is a fitting tribute to Batman on his 80th anniversary.”

Detective Comics #1000 is expected to hit shelves March 2019.
