Police have arrested a suspect in connection with an arson case that took place over the weekend at Anime Los Angeles. The incident resulted in seven cars being set ablaze in the parking lot of the Azure Hotel and Suites, adjacent to the Ontario Convention Center and Doubletree Ontario Airport Hotel where the long-running anime convention takes place, in Ontario, California. This year’s convention ran from January 10-13, 2019.

Police arrested Matthew Masumi Toyotome, 27, on suspicion of arson the day following the fire. The night manager of the Azure Hotel and Suites told ABC News that security footage “…showed a man walk up to the main vehicle, pour two cans of gasoline all over it, and then [flick] a match on it.”

The main target in the attack was a car belonging to Julia Moreno Jenkins, a cosplayer, who stated on social media that her car was “targeted and set on fire by an obsessed stalker.” Jenkins identified the suspect as seen on the security footage to the police. After her car was fully in flames, the fire spread to nearby cars; the hotel was eventually evacuated.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help replace Jenkins’ car.

“While I was attending Anime Los Angeles, my car was targeted and set on fire by an obsessed stalker who specifically set my car on fire… I appreciate everyone who has helped be here for me during this ordeal, and thank you all for encouraging me to go through with starting a GoFundMe. I can’t say thank you enough for the cosplay community being so supportive and helpful to me in just every way,” the page reads.
