What if Captain America hadn’t vanished during World War II? What if Spider-Man didn’t become a crimefighter? What if Thanos joined the Avengers? While these drastically different realities may never play out on the big screen, fans may get to see them explored on the small screen.

According to an exclusive report from Slash Film, Disney’s upcoming Disney+ streaming service will be adapting Marvel’s What If? comic book series into an animated TV series.

Narrated by Uatu the Watcher, the 1977 series would open with specific events from the main Marvel Universe before exploring the potential ripple effects those events would face by changing certain details. One such episode to be adapted for the series includes the What If? #47 story “What If Loki Found Thor’s Hammer First,” by Peter Gillis, Kelley Jones, Sam de la Rosa, and Bob Sharen.

While none of the stories depicted in the show will be considered canonical to the MCU proper, it remains possible that some MCU actors will lend their voices to their animated counterparts. The report also suggets that each episode will follow standalone stories, in an anthology-style series.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will oversee the Disney+ project, which as of now has no release date set.
