DC Universe has released the first trailer for Swamp Thing and it looks downright scary.

In this version, Swamp Thing’s origin will be told when CDC Doctor Abby Arcane returns to her hometown in Louisiana where a strange plague is affecting the population. Abby tries to ascertain the scientific causes, but strange swamp related things keep happening, making her realize something supernatural is occurring.

The tone is very clearly situated in the title’s horror roots, which is no surprise since James Wan, the current go-to horror producer/director, is executive producing the show. The trailer is presented as a montage with short bursts of footage of fear and desperation with isolated swamp scenes, bone-creaking vine growth, a hatchet-wielding guy in a pig mask, the Blue Devil mask, and Swamp Thing slowly rising from the water.

Swamp Thing will premiere on DC Universe on May 3, with a 13-episode run. It stars Andy Bean as Alec Holland, Derek Mears as Swamp Thing, and Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane, with Jennifer Beals, Virginia Madsen, Henderson Wade, Will Patton, Maria Sten, and Ian Ziering.
