Spyglass Media Group announced a reimagining Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic Hellraiser. This is their first project since launching in March 2019, and David S. Goyer is signed on to write and produce the movie.

The original film was based on Barker’s novella, The Hellbound Heart, which sees the doors to another dimension opened when a man is resurrected. The Cenobites, a group of hellish creatures led by Pinhead come through that door to engage in extreme forms of sadomasochistic torture on their victims.

Since Barker shocked and terrified viewers in the late ’80s, Hellraiser has gone on to become a 10-movie franchise, multi-issue comics and one-shots, plus novels and video games.

“Clive and I go back more than 30 years together,” Spyglass chairman and CEO Gary Barber. “For generations, his brilliantly twisted and imaginative Hellraiser haunted the minds of moviegoers with its searing imagery of Pinhead. David is the perfect storyteller to continue Clive’s vision for a new theatrical version of Hellraiser.”

Goyer co-wrote Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, wrote the Blade film trilogy, and co-wrote the upcoming Terminator: Dark Fate.

“I’ve been a fan of Clive’s work since the original Books of Blood paperbacks and The Hellbound Heart novella,” Goyer said. “Having the chance to reimagine Pinhead and the Cenobites for a new audience is a nightmare come true. Gary is a true fan as well and we’re committed to making something dark and visceral.”
