As revealed via Deadline, Disney has enlisted Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi to helm a new Flash Gordon animated feature film. According to the report, Waititi is in early negotiations to write and direct the animated film.

Flash Gordon originally began as a science fiction comic strip created by Alex Raymond in 1934, to compete with Buck Rogers. The popular comic strip followed a man from Earth and his companions as they travel to the alien world of Mongo to confront Ming the Merciless. The strip eventually launched a famous serial starring Buster Crabbe along with multiple movies and television series.

The character was revived in 1980 with a live-action film starring Sam Jones and Max Von Sydow featuring a memorable theme song and soundtrack by Freddie Mercury and Queen. This Flash Gordon film has since become a cult favorite. Fox has been working on a reboot for years, with directors Matthew Vaughn and Julius Avery both previously announced for the Flash Gordon project as a live-action film.

Now, following their acquisition of Fox, Disney is wasting no time getting those big name franchises back into development. Currently, no further details on the Flash Gordon animated feature have been announced.
