Another familiar Man of Steel is flying onto The CW’s upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths Arrowverse crossover. As revealed via Entertainment Weekly, Tom Welling will reprise his Smallville role of Clark Kent/Superman for the crossover.

Welling is the latest actor to return to his Superman roots for the series event. Brandon Routh (Legends of Tomorrow), who portrayed the Kryptonian hero in 2006’s Superman Returns, will portray the Kingdom Come version of the character for the crossover. Supergirl’s Tyler Hoechlin will also reprise his role as the Arrowverse’s current Superman.

“For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville. Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrowverse, without it,” crossover executive producer Marc Guggenheim said in a statement. “So when we first started talking about Crisis on Infinite Earths, our first, second and third priorities were getting Tom to reprise his iconic role as Clark Kent. To say that we’re thrilled would be a Superman-sized understatement.”

Welling starred as a young Clark Kent for 10 seasons on Smallville as it followed the hero’s early beginnings as a small town hero turned superhero. He finally slipped into Superman’s classic tights and cape for the final season to battle Darkseid and his Apokolips minions. Shortly after the series ended, a comic book adaptation continued this version of Superman’s adventures.

“We jumped onto this idea that at the end of the show, the idea is that Clark becomes Superman and he’s out there, and we know he’s out there, but we can’t go with him, but that we know and we feel good that he’s out there doing good,” Welling previously told EW. “That was what we strove for, and I think we hit it. I liked the ending of the series, because it’s like, ‘Yes, he did it!’ I hope the audience didn’t feel like we didn’t show them something that they needed to see. I felt like we gave them the jumping-off point for their imagination as to what could happen.”

Following Smallville’s conclusion, Welling starred in Parkland, Draft Day, and Lucifer. So far, no details have been shared on how Welling’s Kent figures into the five-hour crossover.

Crisis on Infinite Earths kicks off on Sunday, December 8, at 8 PM ET with Supergirl, followed by Batwoman on Monday, December 9 at 8 PM, continuing into The Flash on Tuesday, December 10 at 8 PM. After the winter hiatus, the next part takes place in Arrow on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, at 8 PM and will come to its epic conclusion with Legends of Tomorrow at 9 PM.
