On March 21, 2017, the American Legion Smith/Wever Post 651 hosted an Award and Remembrance Ceremony for Long Island heroes of the Korean War. Comic creator Billy Tucci, who is very active in supporting veterans, was a driving force behind the event.

Known as “The Forgotten War,” many vets of the Korean War (which occurred from 1950 to 1953) consider themselves forgotten, since it occurred between the size of World War II and the controversies of the Vietnam War.

At this event, 20 veterans were given accolades from fellow Long Islanders. They were given the Grateful Appreciation Medal and Honor Award by members of Post 651. The New York State Certificates of Appreciation from Senator Thomas D. Croci was presented, as well as presentations by Town of Islip Elected Officials John C. Cochrane Jr., Steven J. Flotteron, and Alexis Weik. Members of the Korean War Veterans Association of Greater New York were also there.
