Guy Gilchrist, best known for drawing the seminal Nancy strip since 1995, was announced as the fifth honoree in the 2017 Wizard World Hall of Legends. This new initiative is dedicated to celebrating the artists, writers, and insiders who have built the industry and those who continue the traditions. On September 8 at 7 PM, Gilchrist will receive his award during a ceremony at Wizard World Comic Con Nashville

When he was only 24, Gilchrist was personally selected to create Jim Henson’s Muppets comic strip – which was published in 660-plus newspapers worldwide from 1981 to 1986. Over the years, Gilchrist has worked on properties like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Tiny Toons, Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock, The Pink Panther, and Minnie Mouse. He was also instrumental in the creation of The Muppet Babies.

In 1984, following his visit as a guest of honor at the White House, Gilchrist’s Muppets artwork was preserved in the Smithsonian Institute as a symbol of a National Treasure. Nancy is syndicated internationally in 80 countries and some 400 newspapers, reaching a viewership of 57 million readers worldwide. This year marks Gilchrist’s 22nd year drawing Nancy, her Aunt Fritzi, and Sluggo.

As an avid supporter of charities, Gilchrist has previously been honored for his contributions by Vanderbilt Hospital, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Hartford Children’s Medical Center, Shriners Hospitals, and The Angelus. Additionally, Gilchrist has been honored by the armed forces and veterans’ organizations for his support for military and veterans’ causes.

“I am touched to have been selected by Wizard World to join the distinguished list of honorees. I am especially gratified that I am able to receive this honor in my hometown,” shared Gilchrist.

“Guy Gilchrist is a worthy and strong addition to the Wizard World Hall of Legends. He has thrilled millions with his work on huge franchises like the Muppets and Nancy, and he has shown a deep commitment to children’s causes and charities,” added John D. Maatta, Wizard World President and CEO.

Gilchrist joins Rob Liefeld, creator of the popular Cable, Deadpool, X-Force, and Youngblood franchises; Trina Robbins, the first woman to draw Wonder Woman; Jeff Smith, creator of the famed comic book series Bone; and Green Arrow and Green Lantern artist, Mike Grell.
