Quantcast

Marvel; December 1979
Cover by Al Milgrom and Klaus Janson

Title: “The Killing of Windeagle!”
Synopsis:
Black Panther struggles with his own faulty memory – and a supervillain named Windeagle (at least until someone takes Windeagle out).

Writer: Ed Hannigan
Penciler: Jerry Bingham
Inker:
Gene Day

Review: At its best, Marvel Premiere offered little-used characters a place to shine in self-contained adventures. But other times, as with this issue, the series gave already-in-the-can installments of canceled series a final resting place. Black Panther, whose book by this same creative team was canceled earlier in 1979, hits the ground running with this confusing, already-in-progress issue. The better part of six pages is spent getting the amnesiac Panther and reader up to speed, but both are left feeling a little muddled. Thankfully, the art is stronger than the story, due in large part to Gene Day’s detailed ink work.

Grade: B-

Cool factor: Typically fine work by Gene Day, one of the era’s most underrated inkers.
Not-so-cool factor:
Windeagle. Seriously.

Character quotable: “Good work, Taku. There is a mystery here!” – King T’Challa, a/k/a the Black Panther
