All of that money will be going to the Prevent Cancer Foundation, the only U.S. nonprofit focused solely on cancer prevention and early detection. Founded in 1985, it has catapulted cancer prevention to prominence and fulfills its mission through research, education, outreach, and advocacy across the country.

This year’s total breaks last year’s, which was an incredible $2.2 million. Since its inauguration in 2010, the Games Done Quick events have now raised more than $19 million, which has benefitted other charities such as Doctors Without Borders and the Houston Food Bank.

The GDQ marathons are speedrunning events in which games are speedrun nonstop for the entire week; speedrunning is the act of finishing a video game as quickly as possible within certain parameters. Many speedruns either fall into “any%” or “100%” runs, though there are also subcategories of many games such as “glitchless,” “no out of bounds,” or even “reverse boss order.”

Summer Games Done Quick will take place from June 23-30, 2019, in Bloomington, Minnesota. All of the events are streamed via Twitch and other services; the peak viewership for this year’s AGDQ was 219,240 simultaneous viewers. It was also announced that while AGDQ has typically been held in the Rockville, Maryland area, the 2020 event will be moving to Orlando, Florida.
