Heritage Photographs Auction, which took place on April 17, 2016 in New York, exceeded $1 million! Included in these offerings was, The Reflections of Childhood Collection, Part II which sold for more than $526,000. This collection features a group of rare photographs that capture the mystery and even the pain of growing up.

Some choice lots from this amazing collection include Alfred Eisenstaedt’s classic Children at a Puppet Theatre, Paris, 1962, which sold for $25,000; Levitt’s Boys with Branches, New York, circa 1939, which finished at $22,500; and Children with a Broken Mirror, New York City, circa 1940, which sold for $18,750.

“We are extremely pleased to offer our clients a selection of photographs found practically nowhere else. We saw strong demand for vintage prints by William Klein, and Hellen Levitt which very rarely appear on the market as well as iconic images by Alfred Eisenstaedt and Ansel Adams – many of which drastically surpassed expectations,” said Nigel Russell, Director of Photography at Heritage Auctions.

One such lot was William Klein's rare piece, Stickball Player + Johnny, New York, 1954. After an intense biding war, the piece was finally realized at 20,625 against a $4,000 estimate. As for contemporary highlights, Nan Goldin’s Nan and Brian in bed, NYC, 1983, sold for $18,750; while Steve McCurry’s National Geographic magazine cover shot Afghan Girl, Pakistan, 1985, finished at $16,250, double its pre-auction estimate.

Some additional highlights include Zehra (three boys showing off muscles), 1967 by Josef Koudelka (Czech, b. 1938) realized at $16,250; El Capitan, Sunrise, Winter, Yosemite, pl. 10 (from Portfolio VII), 1968, which sold for $13,750. As well as a never before sold Contact Sheet of David Bowie – shot by Helmut Newton in 1983, realized at $15,000; and Xie Kitchen, Badcock Yard Studio, 1869, shot by Lewis Carroll, which sold for $12,500.
