Last week Hake’s Americana & Collectibles’ Auction #218 closed with another $1 million in sales. Through the flurry of bidding on a wide variety of collectibles, the auction saw some impressive results from start to finish.

Among the stellar sales were the Cartoon Adventures complete Buck Rogers strip card subset. The subset was expected to realize between $1,000 and $5,000, but spirited bidding pushed the memorabilia to $13,775.

The complete Buck Rogers subset consisted of 24 cards, rather than other subsets that consist of just 8 cards. The John F. Dille Co. Cards depict great art of Buck, Wilma, Dr. Huer, spaceships, and more. Making them even more impressive, they were given a Near Mint to Near Mint+ grade.

Hake’s sold the complete Cartoon Adventures strip cards through four lots, #2476-2479, in Auction #218. According to The Non-Sport Bible by Chris Watson, the current value of a complete set in Excellent condition is $3,400. Last week, Hake’s sold the complete Cartoon Adventures set for $20,100.

“We have sold high grade cards from this coveted set in the past and they have always performed well,” Hake’s President Alex Winter said. “While the cards we offered this auction far exceeded our estimates, it does not surprise me that bidding was as strong as it was. Here is a case in which rarity and condition combined to propel these cards to a new record price.”
