Original Sunday page comic art from the 1930s for Flash Gordon, Popeye, and Krazy Kat will be a taste of what bidders will be treated to at Philip Weiss Auctions’ next big sale on Thursday, September 8, in the firm's showroom at 74 Merrick Road, Lynbrook, NY. Over 600 lots of comics, comic art, animation, illustration art, sports items, movie memorabilia, and more will be sold.

All three of the 1930s era Sunday pages are pen and ink drawings in black and white, by several of the most renowned illustrators of the day. Krazy Kat, a character as influential as it was popular, was drawn by George Herriman (1880-1944). Flash Gordon was drawn by “the artist's artist,” Alex Raymond (1909-1956). And Popeye was drawn by his creator, Elzie C. Segar (1894-1938).

The auction will feature Part 3 of the Joe Kubert collection. Kubert (1926-2012) was a legendary comic artist in his own right. His estate includes important drawings by him of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, as well as signed original cover art for Tor #3 (1974), Starman #12 (1st Special, 1976), Dr. Fate #9 (1975), Omac #8 (1975), Battle Classics #1 (1978) and G.I. Combat #198 (1977). 

Additional comic art will include a hand-colored Prince Valiant page from 1980 by John Cullen Murphy (1919-2004), and an original Tim Tyler's Luck Sunday comic page from 1937 by Lyman Young (1893-1984). Animation art will feature attractive and highly collectible production cels and limited edition collectible pieces from Disney, Warner Brothers, and other major studios.

The sports category will feature a huge assortment of modern specialty cards, including limited editions, swatch cards, signed cards, and more. Examples will include a very rare 1887 Egerton Williams baseball card set; a baseball signed in 1932 by Yankee greats including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Lefty Gomez (PSA/DNA); and a Ty Cobb T-206 red portrait card, graded SGC-40.

Additional graded T-206 baseball cards will also come up for bid, as will assorted other baseball cards from 1900 to the present. Also sold will be a baseball single-signed by Babe Ruth, a 1928 New York Yankees team-signed baseball, and other team-signed balls. Non-sports cards will be included in the auction, too, including some desirable rarities spanning the 1930s through the 1950s.

Movie poster collectors will not be disappointed. The sale will include a rare Casablanca insert poster from 1942; a possible one-of-a-kind one-sheet movie poster from the silent 1924 film The Navigator, with Buster Keaton; a late 1940s, post-World War II release French grande poster for the Humphrey Bogart film The Maltese Falcon, 45 inches by 61 inches; a three-sheet poster for the 1941 hit They Died With Their Boots On; and a one-sheet poster for Chinatown, from 1974.

Original paintings, some pulled from a prominent New York estate, will be plentiful. These will include an oil on board Halloween scene by Tom Lovell titled Trick or Treat; a watercolor book illustration with tear sheet by Arthur B. Frost; a gouache and pastel work by Charles Reinhart, titled The First Thanksgiving; and an original pen and ink drawing by James Montgomery Flagg.

Additional artworks will include a watercolor portrait of a woman by Harrison Fisher that served as cover art for the July 1907 edition of Ladies Home Journal; an original oil on board by Mead Schaeffer, of a U.S. Army Encampment, for Martin-Lockheed Electronics & Missile Corp.; and an oil on board Civil War battle rendering by John Clymer titled Last Gun of the Confederacy.

Still more artworks will feature a collection of original Time Magazine paintings by Ernest H. Baker; an oil on Masonite by Spencer Douglass Crockwell; an oil on canvas Western scene by Orren Mixer; an oil on canvas hunting scene by Henry Soulen; and three watercolor works by Zdzislaw Czermanski (one of Stalin and FDR and two of Truman, as President and Santa Claus).

Literally thousands of comic books, from the Golden Age to the present, will be sold, to include key issues from Marvel and DC, and a Golden Age run of Star Spangled and American comics.

The auction is scheduled to begin promptly at 10 AM ET, and Internet bidding will be provided by LiveAuctioneers.com and Proxibid.com. Phone and absentee bids will also be taken.
