Hake’s Americana & Collectibles closed their Auction #219 a few weeks ago. The event saw a plethora of impressive sales, some of which were achieved by EC Comics and related memorabilia.

The highest selling item among EC collectibles was an EC Fan-Addict Club complete kit and letters from 1953 that netted $6,734. Spirited bidding pushed the kit and letters well over the $700 to $2,000 estimate to a record price. It comes with the mailing envelope with the EC logo and “Go MAD! Join the EC Fan-Addict Club” stamp; newsletters #3 (June 1954) and #4 (September 1954); membership certificate featuring the EC logo, the Crypt-Keeper, the Vault-Keeper, and the Old Witch; and membership card.

“EC Comics and all of their publications hold a very special place in the hearts and minds of comic book enthusiasts. The roster of writers and artists for Entertaining Comics is legendary, as they created some of the most compelling stories in the history of the medium,” Hake’s President Alex Winter said. “While issues from the various titles are at the top of most comic collectors want lists, what is also highly coveted, and rarely seen, is the peripheral material. To find an original issue club kit complete and in high grade is a tough challenge as evidenced by the tremendous response we received from our bidders.”

A copy of Shock SuspenStories #6 CGC 9.6 Gaines File sold for $5,132. The issue features stories by Al Feldstein and Bill Gaines with art by Jack Kamen, Joe Orlando, and Graham Ingels, and cover by Wally Wood. It came with a COA signed by Willam M. Gaines, Bob Overstreet, and Russ Cochran.

A first edition hardcover copy of Seduction of the Innocent brought $3,060. The anti-comic book tome was written by Fredric Wertham and published by Rinehart & Company, Inc. in 1954. This copy includes the “Bibliographical Note” page which is missing from most copies after comic publishers demanded its removal. It is arguably the most infamous book about comics.

A copy of Crime SuspenStories #22 CGC 7.5 Restored reached $2,096. This issue includes William M. Gaines and Al Feldstein stories, Johnny Craig cover, and art by Bernard Krigstein, Joe Orlando, Jack Kamen, and Reed Crandall.

Weird Science #13 CGC 9.6 Gaines File copy closed at $2,087. Featuring a cover by Wally Wood with art by Al Feldstein, Joe Orlando, and Jack Kamen, with story by Feldstein and Bill Gaines. It came with a COA signed by William M. Gaines, Bob Overstreet, and Russ Cochran.
