Heritage recently held their Art Deco and 20th Century Art Treasures Through the Modernist Lens auction in Dallas, featuring a collection of art deco pieces from the Jazz Age to World War II. The sell through rate hit 85% with high interest in a wide variety of paintings and sculptures. The total realized for the pieces that had been purchased over four decades by a Hollywood collector was $1,235,738.

The top seller for the auction was the oil on canvas Light Beyond the Trees by Charles Rollo Peters that realized $57,500, five times over the low estimate. The Empire State Building oil on canvas by Glenn O. Coleman that was the catalog cover lot brought $40,000, which was $15,000 over the estimate.

Decorative objects in the sale included a Franz Hagenauer Art Deco Chromed Metal Female Head which sold for $16,875. A Thomas Hart Benton’s ink and pencil on paper, entitled Steel Worker reached $15,000.

Additional highlights were Jean Dubuffet’s La Fumée marker on paper for $23,750, Walt Kuhn’s Clown with Beret oil on canvas laid on Masonite for $18,750, Werner Drewes’ East River oil on canvas for $17,500, Man Ray Untitled (Abstract) oil on canvas for $16,250, another Man Ray Untitled (Abstract) oil on panel for $15,000, and Ernest Fiene’s 5th Avenue and East 54th Street at Night oil on canvas for $15,000.
