In 1962, The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show brought its world of political humor and satire from the small screen to the pages of newspaper comics. The nationally-syndicated comic Bullwinkle, drawn by Al Kilgore, made its mark by synthesizing cutting political satire with childlike humor and absurdity.

Considered one of the most influential newspaper strips of the 20th century, Bullwinkle helped a generation of young Americans develop a broader sense of humor. Bullwinkle was one of the first widely syndicated strips to contain direct satire of the Kennedy administration, Fidel Castro, and the Soviet regime.

During Heritag’s Weekly Internet Auctions, fans of the Bullwinklecomic strip can enjoy a never-before-available opportunity. Originally kept in the Kilgore family’s collection, the firm’s latest offering is a series of original art strips in excellent condition – both drawn and signed by Kilgore himself. Heritage offers dozens of strips every month, with several more available in the firm’s Signature Comics Auctions.

Earlier this year, Heritage Auctions offered similar strips, with several week-long groups of six strips selling for an average of $1,523. The peak was found with a collection of the first syndicated Bullwinkle strips, selling for $2,629; while individual strips were selling for $90 to upwards of $330.

Heritage’s offering includes a wide variety of strips from many time periods throughout Bullwinkle’s syndication. Single strips are currently for sale, with several of the available strips being in direct succession. Along with Rocky and Bullwinkle, the collection of strips includes characters such as Boris Badenov, Natasha Fatale, and Fearless Leader. The collection also features Bullwinkle Production Materials, an archive of behind the scenes artwork by Kilgore.

Having been in the family’s possession for so long, original art from this series has rarely been available to the public previously. Interested collectors can browse further selections to this auction at HA.com/comics
