Heritage is auctioning original comic strip art by 34 top cartoonists from around the world to raise funds and awareness for victims of natural disasters. Heritage is collaborating with The National Cartoonists Society and major strip syndicators to support the National Cartoonists Society Foundation’s Thanks + Giving auction.
The 130-lot Thanks&Giving Auction benefiting Hurricane Relief opens on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, and will close on November 30 at HA.com/NCS. Both syndicated and non-syndicated artists were invited to donate their original comic strips for the auction.
“This auction brings together four of the comic art world’s largest organizations to raise awareness and relief for disaster victims across the country,” said Jim Halperin, Co-founder of Heritage Auctions. “The entire cartooning community wants to make a difference.”
Over 125 internationally-renowned creators donated original artwork, including Patrick McDonnell (Mutts), Lynn Johnston (For Better or For Worse), Mort Walker (Beetle Bailey), Cathy Guisewite (Cathy), Jeff Keane (The Family Circus), Al Jaffee (MAD Magazine), Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman (Zits), Rick Kirkman (Baby Blues), and many other well-known creators. The full list of participants may be found on the NCS website, Reuben.org.
Many of the strips will appear in newspapers across the country on Thanksgiving Day with directions to the auction website.
“Cartoonists are blessed to have the ability to make people laugh or inform their opinions with our little doodles on paper,” said Bill Morrison, NCS President. “But we’re so much more gratified to be able to give aid and comfort to people in desperate, possibly life-threatening situations through the mere sale of our original art.”
All proceeds will be sent to Direct Relief – a charity that specializes in providing humanitarian aid to victims of natural disasters.
