Heritage’s next Animation Art Auction on December 9-10, 2017 coincides with several significant anniversaries within the animation category. The auction, which will be held in Beverly Hills, celebrates the 80th anniversary of Walt Disney’s 1937 masterpiece, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the 70th birthday of Scrooge McDuck with the art of Carl Barks, 60 years of the Hanna-Barbera Studios, the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book, and 40 years of Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation.

Several Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs lots will be in the auction. Featured items are the Old Hag with apple and Snow White production cel Courvoisier setup, “Silly Song” production cel setup with master production background, Evil Queen production cel Courvoisier setup and Walt Disney autograph, studio layout drawing of all seven Dwarfs by Shamus Culhane, and color model cel and master production background.

A Carl Barks “Family Portrait” Disney Ducks painting #73-15 with handwritten letter from 1973 will be sold. It depicts Donald, Uncle Scrooge, Grandma, Daisy, Gladstone Gander, and the nephews – Huey, Dewey, and Louie. The painting comes with the letter Barks wrote to accompany the piece when it was originally sold in 1973.

After the success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney sought a larger studio location. He asked Kem Weber and his brother, Roy, to design the studio in art deco style. From the new Disney Studio that was built in 1940, Heritage will be selling a Kem Weber-designed Disney animation desk with Eric Larson pencil tray and Airline Chair.

A Mary Blair It’s a Small World Disneyland gouache on paper painting will also be sold. Disney held this exact piece when it was shown on the Wonderful World of Color episode “Disneyland Around the Seasons.”

Tim Burton character design concert art group from The Black Cauldron is one of eight lots of Burton/Cauldron material in the auction. This lot features four ink and artist markers drawings and comes from the collection of Disney artist and Black Cauldron producer Joe Hale.

An artistic rarity in the auction is the DC and Marvel Underoos illustration by Alex Toth, which is signed by the artist. This original art represents a rare occasion when DC and Marvel characters appear together, featuring Superman, Spider-Man, Batgirl, Hulk, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl.

The auction ends on December 9-10 and can be viewed at ha.com.
