The Amazing Spider-Man #100 original cover art, which is among the most memorable from the Silver Age, will be offered in Heritage’s Comics & Comic Art Auction on February 22-24, 2018. The beautiful cover by artists John Romita Sr. and Frank Giacoia not only depicts Spider-Man, but also dozens of famous series characters. According to Heritage, this is the first time the artwork has ever been offered at auction.

“This cover was done during the peak period of John Romita, Sr.’s artwork, at a time when Spider-Man’s popularity was extremely high,” Heritage Auctions Senior Vice President for Fine & Decorative Arts Ed Jaster said. “John Romita, Sr., had done the covers and interior of Spider-Man #39-95, and he changed the character from a kind of nerdy high school kid to a more self-confident college student, which is part of the reason why Spider-Man was able to capture more of an older market.”

When the 100th issue of The Amazing Spider-Man was due for publication in 1971, Stan Lee and John Romita, Sr. planned a cover that would celebrate the feat. The art features over two dozen heroes, supporting characters, and villains, including Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy, Aunt May, J. Jonah Jameson, Kingpin, Doctor Octopus, Scorpion, and the Beetle. Drawn in Marvel’s floating heads style, they surround the full body image of Spider-Man.

Additional highlights in the Comics & Comic Art auction are Batman #1 CGC 7.0, All-American Comics #16 CGC 6.5, and Jack Kirby’s and Vince Colletta’s original cover art from Thor #154.
